May 9, 2009 - Sign the Boycott Pledge |

Friday, 09 May 2008 |
Pledge to SupportBOYCOTT OF HTH CORPORATION dba Pacific Beach Hotel and Pagoda Hotel We, the undersigned, join with Justice at the Beach, a committee for justice at Pacific Beach Hotel, to boycott HTH Corporation, owner of Pacific Beach Hotel and Pagoda Hotel.
After two NLRB-run elections, workers of Pacific Beach Hotel finally won the right to be represented by the ILWU Local 142 and began negotiations for a first contract. That was two years ago, but the workers still have no contract to protect their wages, benefits and working conditions.
Worse yet, in the second management change in less than a year, all of the workers were terminated, then told to reapply for their own jobs. Just before the holiday season begins, many of the workers are left without jobs or in demoted positions. |

May 9, 2008 - Honolulu Weekly |

Grab a copy of the latest Honolulu Weekly - May 7-13, 2008. There is a great story on page 5 by Daniel Lee Floren about the Pacific Beach Hotel struggle. Here's a portion of the story where Senator Nishihara refers to HTH's refusal to accept standard contract terms. "Tensions rose again later that November as negotiations halted when the company refused to accept standard contract terms: union security and dues deductions. As neither of them poses any financial cost to the company, the only reason to resist these terms would be to deadlock negotiations or break the union. Every other hotel union contract in Honolulu includes these terms. "It seems like all they want to do is break the union," says Sen. Clarence Nishihara, chair of the Tourism and Government Operations Committee. "If the corporation has enough money to ride it out, the one taking the beating is the worker. They have to go back to work to support their families. It really puts them between a rock and a hard place." The full story follows, courtesy of Travis Quezon, Honolulu Weekly Managing Editor. |
